KOFI ANNAN DEPARTS: TRIBUTE TO AN ICON OF PEACE

Mr Kofi Annan, Ghanaian, career diplomat and world elder statesman died today at the age of 80 years. He was the first African Secretary-General of the United Nations, serving for two terms; 1997-2006. He was well known for his humility and his commitment to global peace. He also cared for Africa, his roots.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. He also devoted much time towards the eradication of poverty and HIV. He continued to work in retirement, serving across the globe, wherever his experience and expertise were needed.

He humorously said he would slow down when asked about his set time for real retirement  at an interview on his 80th birthday. Did he really slow down? Ghana, Africa; and indeed the whole world miss him. Our condolences go to his wife and entire family; and his home nation, Ghana. We salute a global leader; an icon of peace.
